Silver Viking Chain

Hand met ketting

In 2015 I visited Levende Geschiedenis Limburg for the first time. You can read about the first meeting in this blogpost.

Before the second time I visited them I melted silver scrap into a solid rod. Then with the rolling mill and drawplate I made 4 meters of fine silver wire. Ready to start making a viking chain during the day.

On a wooden dowl I start with a bit helpthread of iron for the first rows. The project is a bit like naldbinding. You always work with short peaces of metal.

After some time working, you end up with a stiff chain that you have to pull through a drawplate. In that process the chain gets longer and is now supple and nice to wear.

The end result: 30 cm of thin silver chain.
